The Passengers
by Ric Stewart
Who would have ever thought that ambient music would come to
this, a destination which the second side of The Unforgettable Fire
only intimated. The parternership of Eno/U2 has taken another quantum
leap, after the experimental pop of Achtung Baby and bold spontaneity
of Zooropa, this collection of sounds goes beyond beyond. Recording
as pseudonymous Passengers, Bono/Edge/Mullen/Clayton/Eno anchor
a dominantly instrumental album which doesn't look back. This music speaks
of possibilities of time, space and music which don't exist yet. Lush,
melody vacuums, songs about Elvis, and no rules.
