    Elmore James
    by Ric Stewart

When Elmore James (1910-1963) played electric guitar everything vibrated on the beat. Elmore's barrel house slide figures influenced loads of players; his South Side riffs became elements on the periodic table of blues. A young Englishman, Brian Jones, renamed himself Elmo, and started up a raucous group in London. The Stones became the quintessential good time band. With Elmore the idea of time dropped out. Elmore was just plain good.
